A SAFARI/JOURNEY THROUGH THE USA - A DIARY - 1 - St. Louis, MO

We are traveling through the USA from the 1st of October 2008 to January, 2009. As we are renewing our term in Kenya for two more years, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod -World Mission (LCMS-WM) asked us to do presentations in several congregations about our work and to look for funds to support our budget.
God has blessed us in this journey, as we are meeting so many friend from our Brazilian time and form our Kenyan time, and as we are making many new friends. We are sharing some of the contacts, activities and blessings with you through this BLOG. Sorry if we don’t have pictures of all our contacts or if we missed some of our friends. Remember us in your prayers.

We arrived in St. Louis, MO, on October 2nd. I was invited to lead a devotion at the LCMS International Center (IC) the day after we arrived,

and to do a presentation about our work in Kenya to the LCMS-IC staff.

We had several orientation meetings at the IC, coordinated by Vicki Helling, Development Associate - LCMS World Mission Development Services.

The first one was with Jeff Craig-Meyer, Development Services Director. One by one several people came to talk with us:

Debbie Feenstra, Missionary Support Administrator;

– Bill Lapp, Senior Principal Gifts Officer;

Elizabeth Mowery, Mission Communication Manager;
Kama Bernab, International Mission, Assistant to Dr. Dave Birner;

Stacey Welcenbach, Director, Communication Services;

Ross Stroh, Financial Manager; and others.

During our stay in St. Louis, we were hosted by our good friends Rev. Ellis and Joyce Rottmann, former missionaries in Brazil in the late 1960s.

We met also our friends Rev. Otto and Jill Hintze, former LCMS-WM Secretary for Latin America.
The Rottmanns took us to their church at the weekend, St.Paul- Des Peres, where we spoke at the beginning of each of the four services on Saturday and on Sunday. We did a Power Point Presentation (PPS) at the Bible Class on Sunday morning. – St. Paul – Des Peres – pastors are: Rev. Dr. David S. Smith, Rev. Timothy R. Seban, Rev. Mark D. Femmel and Rev. Paul T.Prange.

This was St.Paul’s annual dinner’s Sunday: Potato Pancake + roast beef. It was a good opportunity to meet several people after the services. On Monday evening we had a meeting with St.Paul’s Board of Mission where we did a PPS presentation and where we shared the challenges we face in Kenya.

– On Monday we visited also Concordia Seminar, with Prof. William Schumacher, who was in Kenya last year teaching at the Seminar in Matongo.

On Tuesday I had a class at the Seminar, talking about the mission challenges in Kenya.

The same day we had a meeting with LCMS President Rev. Dr. Gerald Kieschnick and with Dr. Samuel Nafzger (CTCR), showing them pictures about our work in Kenya. We had also lunch with both.

It was so nice to meet them!

and Robin Barton, from Faith Lutheran Church. Troy, MI.
– Nancy organized an evening event at Immanuel for a group of friends, where we did a PPS. Many of them had been at our house in Brazil on Mission Trips, and they were happy to hear about God’s blessings upon our ministry in Kenya.
We were hosted by Norbert and Carolyn Koschmann, old friends and founders with Pastor William and Patricia Thompson of the Brazil Mission Society (BMS). – Mark Schroeder is part of the BMS Team and had organized several Medical Team Mission Trips to work among the native Indians in Brazil.

A SAFARI/JOURNEY THROUGH THE USA - A DIARY - 3 - Cleveland,Ohio

From Detroit, MI, we took the bus to Cleveland, OI (Oct 15th). Pastor Gary Hill picked us up and did a tour through the beautiful city.

It was Autumn Season and the colorful leaves were something amazing!

Pastor Gary and Carol Hill – Bethany Lutheran Church, Parma, were in Kenya with the Pastoral Leadership Institute (PLI) group in June last year.

We were hosted at the home of Pastor Dave Luecke (Royal Redeemer Luth. Church), and

his wife Marcia.

Pastor Jim and Carol Martin, from Redeemer Luth.Church. Carol was in Kenya last April with the LWML group.

Eddie and Carol Albright. Carol was in Kenya with the LWML group too.

Bethany Lutheran Church prepared a poster, inviting people for our presentations.
Rev. Joshua Schoon is pastor at Bethany too.

We did several presentations at Bethany: At the service on Oct 16th and at the two services on Oct 19th;

– At the Bible Classes on 19th;

– At the School Chapel Hour on 22nd and on the same day at a Ladies group.

Carol Hill led the children at Chapel Hour. Their October offerings were for Kenya Mission.

One of the classes asked me to go to their class and do an extra presentation, with questions and answers.

The Bethany Seniors of Parma invited us for a presentation too.

Carol Albright took us to visit an Amish Community on Oct 17th. The Amish live like in the 1800s, when the first immigrants came to North America. They wear the old style clothes; some of them don’t use electricity; all the farm work is done with horses (no tractors or cars). Many of them are Mennonites. They make very nice old style furniture!

– Carol Albright took Lidia to see more of Cleveland, on the Lake Erie,

and Pastor Hill and Carol took us to visit an apple farm,

– where many pumpkins were sold.

At Royal Redeemer Luth. Church I preached on Oct.18th, Saturday evening.
Carol Martin and Carol Albright prepared a nice display with Kenyan handcraft, brought when both were in Kenya last April.

Royal Redeemer School scheduled presentations for 5 different groups, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, on the 20th, from 10:40 am to 01:30 pm.

It was nice to see how the children were amazed with the African hand crafts!

The Principal Krista Nagy introduced us to the children.

On Oct. 23rd we took part at the Ohio District Lutheran Educators Conference, at Royal Redeemer. 400 teachers came together. We had a display with our brochures and other materials. I was invited to lead a devotion, where I presented the PPS “Children of Africa”.

A SAFARI/JOURNEY THROUGH THE USA - A DIARY - 4 - Fort Wayne, IN

We went from Cleveland to Fort Wayne, IN, on Friday afternoon, where Prof. Douglas & Debora Rutt hosted us. Prof. Rutt has been in Brazil several times. They invited for dinner Prof. David Colles, who was professor at the Seminar in São Paulo, SP; and Rev. Isaiah Obare, son of Bishop Obare, who is doing his Master Degree in Theology at the Fort Wayne Concordia Seminar. (In the picture: Lidia, Carlos, Colles, Isaiah, Debora, Douglas). It was a very good evening!
On Saturday, I was not feeling well. Douglas took my blood pressure and it was very high. He took me to the hospital. Read the report I sent to LCMS-WM:
" Last Sunday (19.Oct), I felt a pain in my left leg. I began to take some medicament that my orthopedist in Brazil gave to me to take in case of pain. And that medicament had a bad effect upon my blood pressure. But I felt it only yesterday morning (25 Oct). My blood pressure was 203/ 98. They thoughtt it was a stroke, because my left leg (more on the feet) was numb and tingling. So also my tongue and around the mouth was tingling. I had a MRI of the brain with and without contrast, and they found "nothing in my brain" … But 'the lumbar spine MRI was most significant for an L4-L5 disk herniation causing L5 nerve root compression'. Electrocardiogram was normal and so were the other tests. I was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning, and came back to Dr.Rutt's home this afternoon (Oct 26th). The blood pressure is now normal and I have some medicament to take because of my spine and my left leg.

I was not able to go to Clear Lake Luth. Church this morning, as it was scheduled; but I send a DVD with my presentation through Bill and Kathy Schumann, who came to visit with me at the hospital; and they showed it at the Bible Class. I will not go to the Pastoral Conference in Indianapolis tomorrow to Wednesday, but I will rest at Dr.Rutt's home. The Doctor allows us to go to Springfield, MO, on Thursday. "

My blood pressure is normalized, but my left leg is still a little numb. I cannot carry any weight so our friends are helping with the luggage and the boxes with the brochures and post cards. God be thanks that I’m feeling better day after day. Lidia is fine and is helping me in everything.

While I was in hospital, Lidia went with Prof. Rutt to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne. It was established in 1837—two years before the immigration of Walther and the Perry County folks.

– On Wednesday, (Oct. 29th) we visited Concordia Theological Seminar in Fort Wayne: The nice chapel, and

Luther statue.

We visited with Pres. Dean Wenthe as well.

In the evening we were invited to a dinner at Dr. Christopher C. Barnekov’s home. Bishop Walter Obare, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya, was visiting the USA, and Dr. Barnekov offered a special dinner to some friends in honor of the Bishop.

Pastor Carlos, Bishop Obare, Dr. Barnekov and Rev.Isaiah (Bishop’s son).

– In front of his house, flags of the USA, Sweden, Finland and of Kenya.

– The day after (Oct 30th) Bishop visited a class at the Seminar, invited by Prof. Detlev Schulz, and answered questions. - The same day, in the afternoon, we took the plane to Springfield, MO.

A SAFARI/JOURNEY THROUGH THE USA - A DIARY - 5 - Springfield, MO

David and Janice Reynolds picked us up at the airport and hosted us in their home. They are the founders of “Builders for Christ in Brazil”. 15 chapels were built in Brazil during the past 9 years. They are planning to come with a team of builders to Kenya next June,2009 to built a chapel in Kiambu. Pray for these plans!

They took us to know Branson, a tourist place, with earlier Christmas decoration.(Nov 1st).

On Sunday they took us to preach at “Shepherd of the Hills Luth. Church”, in Kimberling City, MO. Pastor Richard Futrell and his wife Sheri welcomed us. We preached at both services and did a presentation at the Bible Class.

On the evening of that Sunday (Nov 2nd), Carl & Barbara Tiedt offered a reception for 50 people at their house. After the barbeque, I did a presentation about our work in Kenya and all were invited to help to sponsor the mission in Kenya.

Nov 5th began with a Bible Study during breakfast at 6 am for a men’s group.

After this David took me to Redeemer Luth. School, where I presented a PPS to the children at Chapel Hour.

Principal Paul Baker introduced me to the children.

– After this we went to Sherwood Elementary School, a public school where Janice works as counselor. Several classes came, one after the other, to the library, where I did presentations about the Children in Africa for all of them.

On Saturday, Nov 8th, we went to Redeemer Lutheran Church, where David and Janice are members. The pastors are Jeff Sippy, Duane Maas and Parvey.

There I was invited to perform the wedding of Julie Marie Reynolds, (David and Janice daughter) & Jason Allen Dickey.

The Bible text they chose for their wedding and for their lives comes from 1 Corinthians 1:10: “I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no division among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

On Sunday, Nov 9th, Carl and Barbara Tiedt took us to Faith Lutheran Church: Pastor Jason Shaw. I did presentation at the service and at the Bible Class. People had many questions about the mission and the situation in Kenya.

That day we ‘moved’ to the Tiedt’s house in Springfield. They are members of “Builders for Christ” too and they have been several times to Brazil with the builders’ team.

On Monday we had lunch with Pastor Sippy (Redeemer Luth. Church),who has been to Brazil twice with the Builder’s team. We shareed with him several challenges from Kenya.

On Tuesday we had a presentation at the Lutheran Student Center,

where Donna Rebmann is in charge.

The youth leader, Joseph, is planning to go to Kenya to work as volunteer with the children next year.

On Wednesday we went to Lowel, Arkansas, where we meet Rev. Donaldo Sonntag and his family at Living Savior Luth. Church. They are Brazilians and they prepared a very good Brazilian barbeque (churrasco) for us!

– On Friday (Nov 14th) we went to Elseville, where Frank and Erica hosted us for the weekend. Erica is Brazilian and a good friend from Porto Alegre, RS, the city from where we came in Brazil.
On the way to their house, they took us to visit Alley Spring, a fresh water font: something amazing!

The blue lake formed by fresh water is a Post Card!!!

The Deer Hunting Season (two weeks) had just begun, and we saw many hunters with the deer they hunted.

Pastor Marty Reed invited us to preach at the service on Sunday and to do a presentation at the Bible Study Hour at

Zion Lutheran Church, Poplar Bluff, MO.

We have been traveling for the past two months (Oct.+Nov.) and we have two more months to travel (Dec.+Jan.) before we are going back to Kenya for a second term of two years. Lidia and I thank all friends who are hosting us in their houses and who are taking us from one place to another for the services and presentations, we thank all congregations who are inviting us to preach and to do presentations, and we thank all who are giving us financial support to go back to Kenya to share there God’s Word and God’s love. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOVE! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
(The next Blog will give a report beginning from Kansas, where we spend Thanksgiving Day).
